HYKI110: We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy

We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy

Today our guest is Yael Kohn, author of 'We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy--A Very Oral History'. Starting with the 1950s, Kohen examines the challenges women in comedy have faced, and how each generation developed their own style of performance. In this episode we discuss:

  • Are women funny? (Spoiler alert:Yes)
  • Stand up, and improv, and sketch--oh my!
  • Ridiculing and desexualizing yourself for comic success.
  • Penises and periods.
  • Smart and sexy women can also be...hilarious.
Yael Cohen is a reporter and editor in New York City. A contributing editor at Marie Claire, she covers books, pop culture, and issues important to working women. She has written for New York magazine, Salon, The Daily Beast, the New York Daily News, and The New York Sun.
